Sleep walking most commonly occurs during stage 3 and 4, where there is slow brain activity and the patient has absolutely no idea of his/her body movement. There occur 4- 5 sleep cycles throughout the night and sleep walking primarily occurs during the first or second sleep cycle. Since there is short dormancy time involved in nap, sleep walking does not occur during the day time. Therefore, sleep walking characteristically occurs at night time during stage 3 and 4.
